Protest Karl Rove
West Texas A&M University has invited "Bush's Brain" and the expresident's long-time advisor, KARL ROVE, to be the keynote speaker at this year's graduation ceremonies. I know there should be academic freedom and all that, but come on! — Karl Rove of all people? We good Democrats should at least let the University and our community know that there could be a better speaker...anyone really would be better. Join our protest at the First Bank Center on the West Texas A&M Campus at 5:30 PM on Friday May 8, 2009. Please RSVP as soon as you can to chair@amarilloareademocrats.org

I have a few points to make about this matter.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I would like to state that I am indeed a faithful Democrat, and I along with many people out there, despise the man we know as Karl Rove. I find his political doings rather vile, and of course, against any philosophy of political science I believe in.
Now, with that being said, this protest is absurd, and I want to point out that by doing this, we are alienating the community. Yes, it would be nice if WT had gotten someone else to do this speech, yet we are arrogant to protest this matter. Karl Rove has extensive political experience that very few Democrats could ever rival; he is suitable for this speech. This man has been in politics since 1970, advising Republican candidates in their elections. Yes, we disagree with their positions and their policies, but this does not entitle us to make such action as to protest Karl Rove speaking at a college graduation ceremony. The point is made that this is newsworthy. If this be true, this party will lose so much respect, it would take years to recovery. As we often accuse Conservatives of being bigots, we would now become hypocrites because that is precisely what this action would demonstrate, Democrat bigots. If President Obama knew of this he would be deeply disappointed in the Amarillo Chair of the Democratic Party. Call this off, now. I am a Junior at Bushland HS. I have put in my time, effort, and mind for a few years now to serve this party, and I plan to be in politics. I will not stand for this; do not make this mistake. You wanted to hear the young generation speak, well here is a voice from a 17-year-old.
Do not participate in this. You want to protest something? It’s time for us to rally up about these open-carry gun laws. Perhaps we should go on an educational campaign and fix the common problem of misinformation of nearly everyone in the Panhandle of Texas about the new policies now in place; that would be a far better use of our time and resources, and THAT would gain respect and show a strong Democratic Party. Think about it.
Journeyofrapids:
ReplyDeleteNo, my friend. This is an important and useful statement of principle, not a mistake. It is not merely Rove's policy positions that earn him this protest. It is, in fact, his long "experience" in the kind of politics that most people abhor, regardless of party. Rove has made "hardball" a really soft pitch. He makes Machiavelli look like a bleeding heart. His only real "position" is that power is its own rationale.
And it isn't only that the morality of this man is at issue. It is also that Democrats are on the right side of this politically. The proof that that is so is in the turnout for Rove's speech. Even in the Texas Panhandle, most Republicans don't really approve of him.
There is nothing hypocritical about standing up for our principles and in opposition to the architect of not merely failed policies, but of poison politics. Stop worrying about the few who may be offended. There are far more who are waking up to the fact that there is a real choice in local politics. This isn't just a protest about one individual. It's a protest of the politics he represents and an invitation to Panhandle voters to realize they can do better.
